I’m not sure how else to ask the question. I had a hard drive from an older computer that I figured I’d keep to use for storage and backups.
I used one of those universal converters that allow me to hook it up as an external drive. When it first connected, I turned off the ‘autoplay’ function immediately because it started running through files.
Anyway, I immediately did nothing other than start a scan with AVAST. It found a worm. It wouldn’t clean it either. So, I immediately disconnected the drive (just unplugged – didn’t ask or do it through the menu).
I’m concerned that my main drive w/ the OS system is now infected. I’ve got it scanning right now, but I’m concerned that it if was infected, AVAST won’t work properly.
I’m asking this from my laptop.
One other comment that might make a difference – the episode knocked it off the wireless network. Now, the netgear adapter on that pc can’t see my wireless network.
This is very strange. Details aside, the bottom line question is – will the simple act of linking up a hard drive spread a virus that has infected it? Would the virus scanner "wake it up" somehow?
Any input would be appreciated.

JEH,
Thanks so much for the solid input. I did not power down. I was leary that it would enable the virus to gain a better ‘toehold’ – although I don’t understand them well enough to know this for sure.
The network is working fine, as I was able to link in using my laptop. I have had occasional bugginess w/ the netgear setup but it’s usually ok. I did not allow autoplay to play anything or open anything. My mind will rest easier, but nonethess I will scan the living s&*% out of it in the next couple of days. (I’m doing the complete scan using avast right now, using the deepest setting.). Next, I’ll reboot and do it from the boot level. Thanks again
That statement was ambiguous. The network is working fine now. I powered down the modem and router then turned it on again. I still have no idea if I needed to or not as I did it before I turned on the laptop.

My laptop is SLOW and not recognizing my power adapter anymore. It’s also telling me that I don’t have enough of something (storage, maybe) to open many things at once? Is this my hard drive crashing or is it just full?
I’ve tried doing all of those things but my computer won’t let me. It says that it is "failing to initialize" and can’t perform the following actions and that windows dll cannot make the pictures viewable.

basically an idiot friend of mine somehow broke my laptop. the warranty just ran out so not really interested in fixing it. im just going to get a new laptop, but i want all the files/programs on the hard drive. everything in the laptop itself is fine, he dropped it from about 5 feet, and ruined the power unit (found out when i opened it up. i figure an adapter would work. any thoughts? the HD is a fujitsu MHT-AT 4200 RPM [http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/computing/storage/hdd/discontinued/mht-at-4200-rpm.html]
i usually would just pay to have it fixed, but a lot of the outside of it is banged up, the moniter is not attached lol, so i think it better to just get a new one. plus the one i have is an emachine ewww (a gift ^_^) if any info is needed feel free to ask
i suppose not having all my programs is fine, but can i at least see them, because some i might not remember, lol. then that way i can simply reinstall the programs and the files should just go over

i bought a vantec us 2.0 to ide adapter from cyerguys ( item no. 131 0862) i also downloaded the HDD wizard and then found out that the wizard does not support USB. i only have the laptop. i want to use this as extra storage and this seemed, at the time to be the easiest way to do it, ut no i see i need more. is there a Harddrive unlocker that supports USB?
maybe i am not being clear, i want to unlock a western digital Xbox hard drive useing a usb adapter. i need a unlocking program that supports usb connectivity. i need a program not a enclosure or a free laptop.
