Need help with buying a USB to IDE Converter Cable?

Ok so about 9 months ago my old computer crashed, it was some custom built one with a samsung SP1213N internal hdd.

I never really new what the problem was, I am not that tech savvy but it was christmas time so I just got a good deal on a new laptop.

Now recently it has come to my attention that i can retrieve files from this dead computer’s hard drive , using a cable that would turn it into a external hard drive that I could just plug in to my laptop’s usb.

Would a USB 2.0 to IDE ATA External Hard Disk CD-ROM DVD Drive Adapter Converter Cable work for a samsung SP1213N?

Please I really need help because I had allot of important pictures on that computer like family stuff and some writing.

My desktop recently crashed and I’m looking to get the data onto my new laptop from the old hard drive. It seems that you can take it out and put it into one of these USB adapters… do I have the right idea here? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Just info: My old computer was a Sony VAIO desktop from 2004. The back says Model: PCV-2252

This is the kind of thing I’m talking about:
