I used a USB 2.0 to IDE or SATA adapter from Cables to Go to connect the hard drive from my tower pc(running XP) to my new HP Pavilion 9000 laptop loaded with Vista. The hard drive that I connected was the hard drive loaded with the XP OS, and also had a "system restore/recovery" partition on it. It had special recovery software from Emachines (the manufacturer of the PC) I think.

Usually when the Emachines PC is booted, it first shows the main screen with the Emachines logo and also mentions "[F9] for Boot Options] and the like. Then there is a black screen that says "Press [F11] to start recovery __". The "__" is a countdown that always starts from 2 and then goes to 0. When it gets to 0 it always goes to a new screen where it informs you that it is loading Windows XP. I believe the countdown was to inform the user that after 2 seconds, it would be to late to press [F11] and therefore would have to restart the PC in order to perform the System Recovery. Anyway, it no longer behaves the way it should. Now, instead of continuing to the next screen after the count down ends, it posts a new line in the prompt bellow the first one with the same text as the previous line along with a new 2 sec. count down. It repeats the same thing over and over for eternity. I let it cycle through about 300 lines of crap and shut it down. After several more boots, it does the same thing, and the only response to me actually pressing [F11] is that the current line’s count down ends instantly, only to create a new line. Is this because I connected it to a Vista PC? The hard drive definitely works, but why can’t it be booted from? It’s detected by my old PC and it even loads to the "System Recovery" screen, so it must be connecting. Is there some way I can make the hard drive bootable again?

Also, I already tried using the same adapter with my tower PC and tried booting it that way, but it also freezes on the same screen.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hard Drive Problems.?

I bought an adapter for my laptop’s hard drive (because my laptop broke) and i plugged the adapter into my desktop and it shows alot of files (mostly folders) but none of my pictures and video and music files are on it. And it won’t allow me to access the "owners documents". It wont show up any media files, and thats the purpose i bought the adapter for, to retrieve media files that i lost in a broken laptop.

why?

Where can I find a 1 TB external hard drive that runs off USB power only? Which is the best model?
I need it for my laptop, and I am not willing to carry the AC adapter with me each time I travel.

Thanks.

Laptop HD Adapter?

Well, I’ve been helping a friend out with his laptop and he ordered the wrong Hard Drive. The laptop only has (male) serial ports and the HD that arrived is ATA-6. Does anyone have any suggestions on adapters / converters?

Thanks Mates
Can I upload windows onto the drive if its external?

I have a IDE to usb adapter and I have hooked the hard drive from my xp desktop to my Vista laptop. I can acces the files but everytime I open a folder I have to set the security so I can acces it. Is there a way I can remove any security restrictions on the hard drive so i don’t have to do it for every folder individualy?

Is it possible to run a USB-powered portable external hard drive for too long? Like, could I have it hooked up to my macbook laptop for 3 or 4 hours a day running stuff off the external hard drive or would it be bad since it runs off USB and doesn’t have its own AC adapter?

Internal Hard Drive To My Laptop?

I have an old Desktop that has some important documents on it that I would like to transfer to my laptop. The desktop no longer works so I cant email it or anything like that. Is there any kind of adapter or something that I can purchase so that I dont have to take it to a computer store? Also, I dont want to spend to much.
Would there be a 4 pin peripheral connector to usb adapter?
Thanks,
Jason

Computer not reading external hard drive?

My laptop just recently broke on me, wouldn’t power on, who knows. Anyways, i bought a sata adapter to connect my old hard drive to my new laptop. BUT my computer is only recognizing the adapter and not the hard drive. I have tried it on other computers, same problem. If anyone has any tips or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

I recently bought a 120 gig hard drive to replace my 30 gig. I used byte-to-byte copying software to copy the contents of my current hard drive. All of my files are on the new one, but when I put the new one into the laptop, it doesn’t boot. BIOS recognizes the hard drive and correct size of the drive, but won’t boot windows off of it. Is there something I am doing wrong or a file i need to change? I have tried two different programs for coying files, and I am using a USB to IDE adapter for my new hard drive. Different BIOS settings? anything to change? thank you in advance

My desktop computer crashed. It will not start up at all. Not even in safe mode. I tried restoring it to an earlier point, but this wouldn’t work because apparently the hard drive had errors. It give me the option to fix the errors, but then couldn’t do it because the "C: drive was in use." I know have the hard drive hooked up to my laptop via a SATA to USB adapter. Is there any way to recover it this way? Or should I just back up all the important stuff from it then try a full system restore, deleting everything?
I think its my OS that is damaged. And I don’t have a Windows CD

I recently bought a Western Digital hard drive, but found that my laptop uses a Seagate one. Is there any kind of adapter or attachment that I can buy to use my Western Digital hard drive in my laptop?

www.OnlyYouTrust.com How to Repair a Laptop Power Jack Laptops run on a rechargeable battery, but when that battery runs out, your computer will not work. Laptops come with an adapter that plugs in and attaches itself to a little metal electricity conductor inside the computer. These little power jacks can easily come undone, leaving your computer to run out of battery. To have this repaired by a professional, it can cost you upwards of one hundred dollars just to have them look at it. Then, they will add on an additional charge to actually fix the thing. Don’t overpay when you can do it yourself. Flip your laptop over and remove all of the screws. Be sure to unscrew the ones holding the screen in place. Some screws are different sizes, so keep them sorted in order of where they were removed. Uncover the hard drive housing located at the bottom front of your laptop. The hard drive will be screwed in, so you have to remove those screws before you can take out the hard drive. Pull out the battery from the laptop. There is usually a tab that has to be held in to allow you to release the battery pack. This is located on the bottom of the laptop next to the battery port. Unlatch the two tabs that are holding the screen in place, you need to pull up on the tabs to make them come loose. Use the tweezers to wedge between them and pull up if you are having trouble. Pull up gently, but with enough force to separate the screen from the laptop body. The screen will still be connected

it doesn’t show up in bios

no bios update is available for usb booting for my laptop

so, i’m wondering if i buy an adapter and connect it to the parrallel port instead, will bios see it so i can install o/s on it???

When I turn my hard drive on (unplugged or plugged into my laptop) the power adapter green light will be on ONLY if the power adapter is NOT connected/plugged in to the hard drive. Then second I connect the power adapter to the hard drive the green light on the power adapter will not show and the hard drive does not turn on.

This happened once before, and I eventually got the hard drive to turn on, however this time I can’t seem to get it to turn on.

I’ve had this hard drive over a year so it’s past it’s warranty, I think.

It might be useful to point out that this has happened after an electric storm/thunder and lightening. The hard drive/power adapter was left plugged in to the wall, stupidly. I’m wondering if the power adapter is the problem or the hard drive.

(The time is happened last time and I eventually got it to work was after the same electric storm/thunder and lightening).

My Pc is dead, i have 2 hard drives, 1 has all my data, i need to get access to this, is there a way to do this via USB, or external hard drive, or adapters etc? i can’t turn on the PC, cause the motherboard is dead, i have a laptop and am trying to access through this, any ideas?

im trying to find something that could possibly hook into my external hard rive so i don’t have to keep plugging wires into my laptop at home and just download thing straight to my hard drive wireless something like blue tooth or something i know i will loose a lot of speed but i would still like to have something like this

i really have alot of info/softwares on this H-Drive but i am not using it no more since i got my laptop and it really bothers me that i have to turn it on everytime i need something. There is any adapter, console, coverter or something that i can use???? Help me :’( pls…..
