I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook (out of warranty) that fell from 2-3 ft. onto a hard ceramic floor. Before the fall, it was powered on and working fine, but in the closed position. When I picked it up and opened it, the screen was black and the power lights were off. I did not see any noticeable breakage on the computer. I pushed the power button to turn it back on but nothing happened, no lights, no sounds, nothing.

I tried resetting my computer by holding in the power button for 30 seconds, removing the battery, holding the power button again, attaching the ac adapter without battery, etc. No luck.

I’m sure the problem is not my power source, as I just got a new battery charger/adapter which is working fine, and my battery was fully charged. I also know the problem is not with the hard drive, as I have since removed the laptop’s hard drive and used a hard drive enclosure to connect it to my desktop computer to retrieve my files. All files were intact.

I am pretty good with a screwdriver and I have the service manual for my Dell Inspiron 6000. I like to try to fix things myself before taking to a repair shop. I have some electronics knowledge and know the safety precautions to take. All I need is someone to tell me what to look for that I haven’t tried already.

Any ideas?

When I slide the Hard drive(allready in the caddy) into the notebook it will go all the way in but I never feel it engage, and the computer will give a message of no hard disk found. Is there an adapter that I need for Dell Inspiron laptops?

I will use it for general school work and net surfing(myspace exc.) I will also need to put lots of music on it. Would you recommend Frost/LimeWire for a free music service. If not, any ideas?

I need a place online that sells old brand specific parts like batteries and power adapters for laptops at a good price.

I have an old Dell inspiron 5160 that I use occasionally… It’s battery is just about useless by now though… I never really took care of the battery (like making sure to run it down before recharging and whatnot… I never had the time) But, for the last year and a half the battery was never used until tonight… but it’s been in the computer while it was plugged in that whole time. Which I’m 90% sure is why, when I used the battery tonight, the computer was EXTREMELY slow and the battery lasted a total of 15 mins.

What I’ve heard is that, when you aren’t using them, you should store batteries unplugged at about 40% charge… and they last a lot longer. How accurate is this?

So I need an unused Inspiron 5160 battery and I would also like to have an extra power adapter just so I don’t have to add any more wear and tear on the one that I have.

And one last question about parts. Do you know if the hard drive for this laptop is ATA-6? Was that the standard 2-3 years ago before everything went Sata? Or was it Ultra IDE or something. I can’t find any descriptive pictures to tell me what I have… I know it’s a parallel configuration with aprox 50 pins and that I switched it out with 2 other laptops from around that time (one vaio, and one everex walmart brand pos) and it was compatible. I just want to buy a spare HD too just in case. Parallel is a dieing technology for hard drives, so I don’t want to have to pay 0 for only like a 10 gig drive in a few years when Serial’s flooded the market.
lol… ya i did a google search… i don’t want to spend + on 4 year old parts ;) … i need a good price.

And newegg has a very small selection of "open box" items, which is a sneaky way of saying "it’s used… so we’ll knock off"

No brand-specific parts like batteries and power adapters tho and NOTHING that’s for a 4 year old model.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 I bought in December 2005 and now it is basically useless. It runs very slow; if the AC adapter comes out it turns off; I no longer have my original startup page and somehow I am no longer able to access Microsoft word. I am interested in purchasing a new laptop that will last longer with good battery life and a Microsoft package but I am clueless about REM, hard drive, etc.

I have a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop, and a few months back it crashed when someone decided to mess with the processes. I just now got around to fixing it, at first trying to save data from the hard drive. Getting frustrated with my hard drive adapter and IDE cable and still not being able to access the slave drive, I decided to run the Windows System Reset/Restore thing (Ctrl F11 from start-up on Dell), but like a moron I didn’t have the machine plugged in. The battery flaked out during the process, and now I can’t run Restore again. I recently acquired a LAN cable, and I’m wondering if there is some way I can boot the laptop from the working computer. Also, I have an external hard drive and a copy of Windows, could I boot from the external hard drive if I put the operating system files on the hard drive?

I noticed a little while back that the battery on my laptop would no longer charge more than 2% when plugged in. Now, the battery charge level is sitting at 0% and when i turn on my laptop an error message appears that reads: "The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance." The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1545, with Windows 7 Home Premium, Celeron Dual Core, 250 gb hard drive, 3 gb of RAM. The AC adapter that I’m using is the one that came with it. Is there anything I can do to get my computer working right again?

It’s i little over a year old and it cost about 0.00
Dell Inspiron 1501
Windows Vista Home Premium
2 ghz AMD processor
2 gb ram
100 gb hard drive
wireless adapter card

When I put my charger in the battery doesn’t charge and I thought that it was the adapter so I bought another one but it still doesn’t charge. Is it the place where you stick your adapter in? (I’m sorry, I don’t know what it’s called. I hope you understand what I’m tryin to say) Or is it the battery? How much will it cost to get a new hard drive and to fix the other problem? Please answer, thank you
My computer is a Dell Inspiron 6000
My hard drive crashed. Please tell me what it’ll cost to get a new one
I tried taking the battery out and when I turn it on it comes on for a minute then it shuts off. I think it’s the place where you stick the adapter
John, it just turns on and shows the Windows XP logo then it shuts off

And if so what would the receiving computer look like with this other hard drive in it? The reason i need to do this is because my laptops battery and ac adapter died and I need to get the files so I can put them in the new laptop I am getting soon.

The laptop with the dead power is a Dell inspiron e1705

I recently bought a Lacie USB 2.0 160GB external hard drive but had to return due to a power surge on my hub port. This decive wasnt being recognised on my Dell Inspiron 510m laptop and the following message appeared ‘The USB mass storage devise has exceeded the power limits of it’s hub port’. Does this mean that my computer does not support USB 2.0 drives? Do I need a power adapter as additional source? If any out there have a similar problem and have now found the right drive for their computer, then please advise with recommendations.

The power adapter on my laptop died and i need to get some files off of it so i took the SATA hard drive out of my laptop and put it in my desktop computer. the bios on the computer detects the hard drive and Windows XP shows the hard drive in the Device Manager but the partitions on the hard drive do not show up in my computer or the Windows XP Disc Management. I Have also tried to hook it up with a USB Drive Mate and onto another computer. I know my SATA ports on my board are good because both computer have a secondary SATA Hard Drive.

The Laptop does have a little bit of life still in it (about 5 min) and i know it will boot the Hard Drive to all of the 3 partitions (XP, Vista and Ubuntu)

Can I swap hard drives in laptops?

I have a broken Dell Inspiron Laptop, i’m going to sell it but since it wont turn on or charge. I want to know if i can take out the hard drive and installing it in my HP laptop to delete any information on it before i sell it. Can it fit and work? or Do i have to buy an IDE hard drive adapter and make the hard drive a slave and install it into an IDE computer?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop and the hard drive stopped working. I looked online for any information about finding compatibility between laptop hard drives. Everything I looked up said that all hard drives are compatible. Now that I have my new Hard Drive (SATA), it doesn’t look that same as my previous hard drive did. My old one had pin connections and my new one does not. (I took the original out of the cradle that allows me to put it in my computer – they still look different)

The only difference I see between the hard drives is that my new one is a SATA while my old is an ATA/IDE.

Does this explain why they look different? Can I buy an adapter or must I buy another hard drive?

Thanks!

Hard drive recovery from USB adapter?

My dell inspiron laptop running windows vista crashed because an important windows files was deleted or damage somehow. I cannot restore the system however because it will not let me without the admin password which I never made. I do not want to reformat the computer yet because I have important files on the hard drive so I was wondering would this work:

Remove the laptop hard drive and connect it to another computer through a USB ATA Serial adapter to recover the files I need. Will this work even with the windows crashed on the hard drive? This would be an alternative to connecting it to another computers hard drive as a slave.

I have a Dell Inspiron 2500 hard drive and I want to make it a scondary drive on a Dell Dimension 2400. I tried using a Laptop to IDE Hard Drive Adapter however I can’t seem to connect it to may laptop hard drive. There is another type of an adapter that is sold with mounting brackets should I buy that insted?
I need to extract files from my laptop hard drive and currently it doesn’t work in my laptop. I just took it out.
