I’m not sure how else to ask the question. I had a hard drive from an older computer that I figured I’d keep to use for storage and backups.
I used one of those universal converters that allow me to hook it up as an external drive. When it first connected, I turned off the ‘autoplay’ function immediately because it started running through files.
Anyway, I immediately did nothing other than start a scan with AVAST. It found a worm. It wouldn’t clean it either. So, I immediately disconnected the drive (just unplugged – didn’t ask or do it through the menu).
I’m concerned that my main drive w/ the OS system is now infected. I’ve got it scanning right now, but I’m concerned that it if was infected, AVAST won’t work properly.
I’m asking this from my laptop.
One other comment that might make a difference – the episode knocked it off the wireless network. Now, the netgear adapter on that pc can’t see my wireless network.
This is very strange. Details aside, the bottom line question is – will the simple act of linking up a hard drive spread a virus that has infected it? Would the virus scanner "wake it up" somehow?
Any input would be appreciated.

JEH,
Thanks so much for the solid input. I did not power down. I was leary that it would enable the virus to gain a better ‘toehold’ – although I don’t understand them well enough to know this for sure.
The network is working fine, as I was able to link in using my laptop. I have had occasional bugginess w/ the netgear setup but it’s usually ok. I did not allow autoplay to play anything or open anything. My mind will rest easier, but nonethess I will scan the living s&*% out of it in the next couple of days. (I’m doing the complete scan using avast right now, using the deepest setting.). Next, I’ll reboot and do it from the boot level. Thanks again
That statement was ambiguous. The network is working fine now. I powered down the modem and router then turned it on again. I still have no idea if I needed to or not as I did it before I turned on the laptop.

I have a laptop that only has the capability for wireless B. If I buy a wireless G adapter like this one http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10076870&catid=
or this one http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10080888&catid=
will I be able to connect to wireless G networks and have the full 54mbs (I know its only half that but 25-27 mbs is better than 11(5-6mbs) and does anyone know what if tigerdirect sells laptop hard drives that are compatible with a IBM Thinkpad T40.
Sorry too fast typing thinking about other things. I meant does anyone know if tigerdirect sells laptop hard drives that are compatible with a IBM Thinkpad T40 laptop, or are all 2.5" HDD’s the same?

I may have ordered the wrong hard drive, but I want to make sure that it was my mistake and I want to know if it would be something I could get an adapter for it before I pay the restocking fee.
Here are pictures of the two drives and their specs, first the original drive that came with the laptop:
Specs:

Picture:

Look at the part that looks to be made of copper (interface?) and meets with a corresponding piece on the laptop (Mothorbord?), its on the top of the first images and on the bottom image. These two pieces are different, the original has copper pieces that stick into the laptop, but the new drive has a piece that looks to lay onto another piece.
So, where did I mess up, and is their any way I can use the new drive?
Thanks

We have 2 HP Pavilion Dv5000 laptops. One of them will not start up. I have tested the ram, the hard drive, AC adapter/power cord, both batteries in the other laptop and the hardware all works.
So in the bad laptop, all the lights come on, fan comes on, DVD drive works, but laptop refuses to boot up. Cant get anything up on the screen to go into BIOS or Safe mode. After everything we have read and tried, we have come to the conclsion either the CPU got fried or the motherboard has gone bad. Just trying to figure out if the laptop would still have power and lights if the CPU or motherboard is dead. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.
PS… do not tell me to call HP or take it to a tech repair, I cant afford it and HP refuses to help anyone. Its all over google about these laptops & HPs horrible customer service/lack of help with this issue.
In response, I have tried to hook it up to a working monitor and still doesnt work. Also, I have tried the "Fn + F6" trick which has seamed to work wonders for everyone else and the cycling the power trick (removing batteries, power cord, holding power button down for 30 secs to 1 min, then plug in and power up) Nothine of them has worked. Ok, thank you for the great answers and advice. It is very much appreciated. I will leave this question up just in case anyone else has anything to add to the list. Thanks again guys

I want to connect my Compaq Presario V6000′s hard drive to my desktop computer. I know I have to use a hard drive adapter. I was going to get this http://cgi.ebay.com/2-5-3-5-IDE-Hard-Drive-Adapter-Laptop-Notebook-Plug-/300440738072?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45f3a9d918 (I need something cheap!) but do I need to also buy any kind of cable to hook up that item ^ to the computer?
Thanks
By any kind of cable I meant an IDE cable or whatever it’s called. I’m not sure if it’s included with the product.
(Not too good with computers haha)

Could I hook up my hard drive to this, plug it into the desktop’s USB, and access/delete files off the laptop hard drive? I would just delete them on my laptop but it won’t stay on. If this isn’t the thing I need, how about this: http://cgi.ebay.com/IDE-2-5-3-5-inch-Laptop-Hard-Drive-Converter-Adapter-/130395094943?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e5c273f9f ? Would either work?
Thanks
I don’t know what type of hard drive I have, I’m not good with hard drives. I’m guessing it’s a 2.5 since that’s what most laptops have.?
Mine is a Compaq Presario V6000. I got it about 4 years ago.

I have a Belkin USB 10/100 Ethernet Adapter because I was told that I could connect my USB 2.0 harddrive directly to my wireless network. The intention was to load our music onto it and access it from our Tivo. I have had the harddrive connected to my eMac and been able to access my music from the Tivo, but wanted to allow my husband to add his music through his PC. Getting him to connect to my computer and then to it’s external drive was too much work for him. My husband is technically challenged. I’ve shown him how to share files, he still has a hard time and gets frustrated.
He would be accessing it at home through the same wireless network. We just want to be able to share the large harddrive and put all the music in one place.
The external harddrive would be moved to the network and off of my computer as I will be on a lap top soon. I don’t want to have to connect my ext. drive to my laptop any time I move about the house.
Note: It can be connected directly to the server. Doesn’t have to be wireless. Just want to be able to connect to it via wireless laptop. Will supply info on the harddrive….
More info on the USB 2.0 Drive:
Capacity:149.05 GB
Removable Media:Yes
Detachable Drive:Yes
BSD Name:disk1
Version:0.01
Bus Power (mA):500
Speed:Up to 12 Mb/sec
Manufacturer:Cypress Semiconductor
OS9 Drivers:Yes
Product ID:0×6830
Serial Number:############
S.M.A.R.T. status:Not Supported
Vendor ID:0x04b4
I’m currently looking at this option. Can someone give me feedback on if this is viable?

I don’t need the usb drive to be connected wirelessly, but I would like it accessible from the other computers. I think using the synology disk can work and I think that I can connect the extra drive to the synology disk via connection. think so?

I have this Compaq Pressario X1360 that I’m trying to repair (I am new to laptops). It has a missing hard drive and I’m not sure if it takes IDE and SATA…It has 13 vertical slots and that’s it..no spacing in between or anything…I’m confused, maybe it needs an adapter or something? Can someone help?
Also what’s the best way to go about finding replacement chassis cover parts? (Ram slot Cover & Hard Drive slot Cover)
Thanks!
Sorry, it was 23 Slots…

Please help me.
Here is what I would like to buy:
I would like to buy a 750gb laptop hard drive and a USB converter. I want to have a hard drive connected to my computer with a USB cable. That’s all. No power cord. No power adapter. Just a USB cable. And this whole thing should be able to fit into my pocket.
Ok.
The problem is that I haven’t been able to find a converter that supports such a large hard drive.
So, what should I buy?
Some converters support laptop hard drives up to 500gb. See link below. Converters that support any hard drive require a power cord. It seems to me that the reason for the 500gb limit or any limit is that bigger drives need more power. Well, what if I try to find a 750gb laptop hard drive that runs at 5400rpm? Would that work?

My desktop recently crashed and I’m looking to get the data onto my new laptop from the old hard drive. It seems that you can take it out and put it into one of these USB adapters… do I have the right idea here? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Just info: My old computer was a Sony VAIO desktop from 2004. The back says Model: PCV-2252
This is the kind of thing I’m talking about:

I’m thinking about buying a DriveWire – Universal Hard Drive Adapter, to copy my laptop hard drive, thats on the way out. All you have to do is plug the new drive into this unit, plug in the usb, and copy.
My question is, will this over write a used hard drive? I have a good used drive that I want to use. I included a link to their website.
