Need help with buying a USB to IDE Converter Cable?
Ok so about 9 months ago my old computer crashed, it was some custom built one with a samsung SP1213N internal hdd.
I never really new what the problem was, I am not that tech savvy but it was christmas time so I just got a good deal on a new laptop.
Now recently it has come to my attention that i can retrieve files from this dead computer’s hard drive , using a cable that would turn it into a external hard drive that I could just plug in to my laptop’s usb.
Would a USB 2.0 to IDE ATA External Hard Disk CD-ROM DVD Drive Adapter Converter Cable work for a samsung SP1213N?
Please I really need help because I had allot of important pictures on that computer like family stuff and some writing.

any cable that goes from ide to usb will work.
you will need to power the old hard drive, though. so maybe plugging in the old pc and powering it up and using that cable might be one option to that.
There are thousands of cables and enclosures that could do exactly what you need.
Any USB (1.1 or 2) to IDE / ATA. Doesn’t have to be for any specific device as all IDE devices run on the same cable. Just ensure your cable has USB at one end, and both IDE Data and Power at the other; otherwise you’ll have to power your HD with a PSU!
Personally I’d recommend the very sollution I chose when I wanted to do exactly what you’re after; I got an enclosure- just a box which had the connecters inside along with space for the HD. It sat in there snug, and the enclosure then connected to my PC via USB (it also needed power from the mains, but that’s fine). That served as additional external storage for me for about a year
I won’t suggest shops as I’m in the UK and chances are you’re accross the pond, but they’re not hard to come by
I have one of those cables, but I can’t remember where I bought it. You could do a Google search for it, but if I were you, I would buy for around $20 (NewEgg) an external USB hard drive enclosure that will accept your 3.5" IDE drive. You then connect a cable from it to any USB port on any computer, power the enclosure on and the OS will immediately recognize it. I have done this with old drives that I use externally on both my desktop and laptop computers.
