USB TO IDE/SATA adapter?

i have hooked up the above device to a drive from my dell xps laptop. (usb connected to another laptop). i think it is hooked up correctly (everything fits) but the drive does not show up in My Computer. does anyone know how to make this work??? no buttons to push. says it does not need cd to install driver for xp or vista (my dead hard drive was in the vista laptop–my good laptop runs xp).
would really appreciate help on this. thank you to people who answered my first question about copying a hard drive to another computer….but none of the answers worked for me.

how do i transfer the recovery (of old hard drive) to usb hard drive?

thank you, aaron patton, for info! so far, so good. just need to transfer the recovery to my external usb drive….and i’m brain dead right now.

When I put my charger in the battery doesn’t charge and I thought that it was the adapter so I bought another one but it still doesn’t charge. Is it the place where you stick your adapter in? (I’m sorry, I don’t know what it’s called. I hope you understand what I’m tryin to say) Or is it the battery? How much will it cost to get a new hard drive and to fix the other problem? Please answer, thank you
My computer is a Dell Inspiron 6000
My hard drive crashed. Please tell me what it’ll cost to get a new one
I tried taking the battery out and when I turn it on it comes on for a minute then it shuts off. I think it’s the place where you stick the adapter
John, it just turns on and shows the Windows XP logo then it shuts off

I have a 750GB SATA 3GB/s internal hard drive that I need to get some files off of. However, my desktop needs a new power supply and currenty won’t start. Is there some kind of adapter and power source out there thqt would allow me to transfer the information to a laptop?
thanks

It has the same SATA and power connectors as a normal 3.5" HDD. Can I hook it up to my motherboard and power supply without an adapter?

I have a drive from a toshiba satellite a65 and would like to put it into a toshiba satellite m35x but when I do it does not boot up. It just goes to a blank screenwith a underscore in the top left. Someone gave me the m35x but there was no hard drive. The machine is faster than my old one but I want to keep all my data and programs. I did purchase the adapter that was needed. Is there something I am doing wrong?
The main reason I would like to do this is because my old laptop’s power jack is busted, so I can’t put the drive back into the old laptop without fixing it. I know how but dont want to go through the trouble.

What is a USB SATA IDE Adapter?

I just bought a IBM 560e thinkpad. It doesn’t have a USB port or cd-rom. If i buy a USB SATA IED, would i be able to hook up my cd-rom and hard drive to my laptop. With the USB outlet, would i be able to hook up my devices that have USB to this USB port.

I want to connect my Compaq Presario V6000′s hard drive to my desktop computer. I know I have to use a hard drive adapter. I was going to get this http://cgi.ebay.com/2-5-3-5-IDE-Hard-Drive-Adapter-Laptop-Notebook-Plug-/300440738072?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45f3a9d918 (I need something cheap!) but do I need to also buy any kind of cable to hook up that item ^ to the computer?
Thanks
By any kind of cable I meant an IDE cable or whatever it’s called. I’m not sure if it’s included with the product.
(Not too good with computers haha)

Does external hard drive burn if always on?

I have a external hard drive. For some reasons I should connect it via usb hub. Usb hub has a adapter. Without adapter external doesnt work.

When I turn-off my laptop external is still on. Do you think if it is always on is it a problem, or it burns??

Basically, I am looking to hook up a USB hard drive, without the USB cord. Do they make such a device that a trnasmitter would plug into my USB port and a receiver plug into my Hard Drive? I’ve seen Wireless network cards done that way to ADHOC laptops or pcs together, but this is much different as I am not setting up a network. I would like to keep my hard drive hidden, without having to hide the cables. Plus I could just take the transmitter when I leave, thus no one who uses the computer can access the drive. Any suggestions???

I am upgrading my long over due 100GB Notebook hard drive to a 320GB. I would prefer to avoid reinstalling everything as I have many programs installed. My laptop is only able to handle one drive at a time but I do have an external drive where I can easily move the files to… If need be I could purchase an 2.5" external drive adapter so both the old drive and new could be running at the same time. If possible I would like to stick to the hardware I already have…

How should I go about doing this? Is there any programs that would make this process easier?

Thanks for your help!

Could I hook up my hard drive to this, plug it into the desktop’s USB, and access/delete files off the laptop hard drive? I would just delete them on my laptop but it won’t stay on. If this isn’t the thing I need, how about this: http://cgi.ebay.com/IDE-2-5-3-5-inch-Laptop-Hard-Drive-Converter-Adapter-/130395094943?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e5c273f9f ? Would either work?
Thanks
I don’t know what type of hard drive I have, I’m not good with hard drives. I’m guessing it’s a 2.5 since that’s what most laptops have.?
Mine is a Compaq Presario V6000. I got it about 4 years ago.

I have a USB hard drive that can be powered by a USB 2.0 port. But my laptop has only USB 1.1. I was thinking of buying a PCMCIA card adapter with USB 2.0 just to make my External hard drive to work. Would it work ? Please help!

My laptop recently got a trojan, due to some friends and there poor choice of music downloads. I attempted to do a system restore, and got the black screen that says: “Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt. Windows\System32\Hal.dll”. Now the system restore wont work. I looked up how to fix this, and was told to access the recovery console via the actual windows XP disc OR download Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install. I only have a system recovery disc that came with the laptop, I never got an installation disc. My warranty must be null and void by now. My laptop DOES not even have a floppy drive. Its a toshiba m35x-s349. my desktop doesnt a have floppy drive either, so im not able to "ghost" it onto a USB. I cant access the OS i keep gettin the black screen with the .dll pop up. Is there anyway to wipe the hard drive while its in this state? Recovery of the lost data is no big deal to me, as I use my desktop for important stuff.

I googled and found that you can purchace adapters to connect laptop hard drives to ur regular desktop. My idea is too make the laptop HD slave to my desktop HD. Use my desktop OS to delete/undo (whichever is easier) the damage. Will this work or am I reaching just a bit? Would I be able to delete the drive this way? Would erasing partitions delete the data? I have spent 4 hours and 33 minutes on the computer today trying to figure this out via google and other search engines

P.S. I If im able to get one of the XP discs. does it have to be same edition? For example could I use an sp3 disc on sp1?

i just installed windows xp on my sony vaio laptop using a windows xp disk from a dell desktop. now my sony vaio laptop is a dell portable desktop with vaio written on it.
