I have a IDE to usb adapter and I have hooked the hard drive from my xp desktop to my Vista laptop. I can acces the files but everytime I open a folder I have to set the security so I can acces it. Is there a way I can remove any security restrictions on the hard drive so i don’t have to do it for every folder individualy?
Is it possible to run a USB-powered portable external hard drive for too long? Like, could I have it hooked up to my macbook laptop for 3 or 4 hours a day running stuff off the external hard drive or would it be bad since it runs off USB and doesn’t have its own AC adapter?

I have an old Desktop that has some important documents on it that I would like to transfer to my laptop. The desktop no longer works so I cant email it or anything like that. Is there any kind of adapter or something that I can purchase so that I dont have to take it to a computer store? Also, I dont want to spend to much.
Would there be a 4 pin peripheral connector to usb adapter?
Thanks,

I have a Belkin USB 10/100 Ethernet Adapter because I was told that I could connect my USB 2.0 harddrive directly to my wireless network. The intention was to load our music onto it and access it from our Tivo. I have had the harddrive connected to my eMac and been able to access my music from the Tivo, but wanted to allow my husband to add his music through his PC. Getting him to connect to my computer and then to it’s external drive was too much work for him. My husband is technically challenged. I’ve shown him how to share files, he still has a hard time and gets frustrated.
He would be accessing it at home through the same wireless network. We just want to be able to share the large harddrive and put all the music in one place.
The external harddrive would be moved to the network and off of my computer as I will be on a lap top soon. I don’t want to have to connect my ext. drive to my laptop any time I move about the house.
Note: It can be connected directly to the server. Doesn’t have to be wireless. Just want to be able to connect to it via wireless laptop. Will supply info on the harddrive….

I don’t need the usb drive to be connected wirelessly, but I would like it accessible from the other computers. I think using the synology disk can work and I think that I can connect the extra drive to the synology disk via connection. think so?
Do i need an adapter? where can i get one? how do i plug the hard drive in another computer? Does the type of computer be the same with the "broken" one? the is a sony vaio (i know, its old) if that helps…..
I have a laptop hard drive that seems to be corrupted. I bought a usb adapter cable and connected it externally to another computer.
The computer recognizes that a hard drive has been plugged in (it makes this little sound) but the drive doesn’t appear in "my computer" (so I can’t access it).
Does anybody know what I can do to gain access even though the drive isn’t shown in my computer???
It’s running on an HP Pavillion a1530n that I got from my aunt recently after she got a new laptop. It’s all stock parts except for the graphics card, which I bought shortly after at the local CompUSA with some money I made helping my aunt out, and an extra gig of RAM I added recently, which made a big difference with this game. With the original 1GB of RAM, Crysis would load constantly from the harddrive, thus causing some lag whenever something new pops up in the game. With 2GB’s of RAM, though, there are no longer any such issues. Adding extra RAM is always a wonderful thing. I have a Toshiba laptop computer, works totally fine. but when I take my old toshiba laptops (internal) hard drive and try and swap it it doesn’t work.
Both hard drives are virtually identical. Both connect to the laptop the same way when I open the panel underneath. EXCEPT on the old laptop it had an adapter on the prongs that I have to remove in order to make it fit.
But once i remove that plastic adapter both hard drives look identical and are labelled identical. so i can place the old hard drive in the new toshiba computer.
the problem happens when I turn the computer on, it freezes on a black screen after the windows (XP) "loading" dots. Than the screen just goes black.
When I try booting up in safe mode with command prompt it fires through all of the Windows .dll files it needs to load on the screen but hangs on crccheck and just freezes.
any help? i just want my old hard drive to work on this machine. it connects perfectly fine. hard drive is a

My laptop just recently broke on me, wouldn’t power on, who knows. Anyways, i bought a sata adapter to connect my old hard drive to my new laptop. I have an Acer Aspire 5520 that has died from a cpu failure. It came with a Toshiba 2.5" SATA HDD and I am wanting to recover some important files. I know that the best way is to buy a laptop hard drive adapter kit, but my question is which one will be compatible? I found this one http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sk… but it says it allows a 2.5" IDE laptop drive to work as a 3.5" IDE drive. If I am reading this right, this is not what I want since the drive is SATA. My desktop is IDE so I am looking for an adapter that will allow my 2.5" SATA drive to plug into my IDE cable on my desktop and run as a secondary storage device so I can just copy the files to a flash drive. I am just a little confused when I search for this and don’t want to spend the money and it be the wrong adapter. Is there anyone with experience doing this that can point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance.
Which adapter do I need to buy to power up my Laptop drive coz there is no 4 pin power connector on my desktop. Also, is it safe to connect like this??
