Can I swap hard drives in laptops?

I have a broken Dell Inspiron Laptop, i’m going to sell it but since it wont turn on or charge. I want to know if i can take out the hard drive and installing it in my HP laptop to delete any information on it before i sell it. Can it fit and work? or Do i have to buy an IDE hard drive adapter and make the hard drive a slave and install it into an IDE computer?

Should I get a new Laptop or hard drive?

I’ve had an hp dv6345us since july 07. i had to install linux because i lost the cd and it got majorly virused. the only upgrade is from 1 to 2 gb of ram ddr2. the cd drive has been messed up. today my hard drive failed. should i get a new hard drive or a new computer?

External Hard Drive Question?

I have an external usb hard drive, and a macbook with built in bluetooth. If I bought a type A female to female usb adapter, and a usb bluetooth adapter, and attached it so the end of the hard drive usb cord was the bluetooth adapter, could i get it to broadcast in bluetooth to my laptop, and connect wirelessly? I don’t think it will work without drivers, but I’m just asking. Maybe someone has done it.

Hard drive–>usb cord–>usb female to female adapter–>usb bluetooth adapter–>laptop through bluetooth

What do you think??

My hard drive gave an error and was not found by the computer just found out that i broke a pin on an adaptor that connects it to the mother board on my laptop, does anyone know what it is called or where i can get it.

It has 44 pins coming into it and 44 coming out at a 90° angle to the ones coming in. Here is a photo http://twitpic.com/2myvz
The device is very small just under a centimetre long and 5 centimetres wide.

Please help if you can or have any idea, this is very urgent.

Thanks in advance
I live in the UK and a exact replacement would be better as it has to fit in a very small place
And also the pin comes in one end and out the other (a female to male connection)

I was recommended to buy an internal hard drive adapter for a lap top HD and an internal sea-gate/ max tor hard drive the newer and older style, the guy showed it to me its a long cord with usb on one end and adapters for both new and old internal hard drive interfaces, as well as laptop ones. He said it’d be on tiger direct or newegg however he didn’t know the name. SO the question is what is the name of this type of adapter for internal hard drives to be used as external.

Laptop won't recognize hard drive…?

My brother has an HP laptop. The other day windows xp became corrupt and needed to be wiped and reinstalled, but he needed a lot of school files off of his computer. So i took the hard drive out of his laptop, and connected it to my desktop using the 2.5" to 3.5" adapter. I got the files off just fine. Then, when i put the hard drive back in his laptop and try to install windows xp i get and error saying: "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer."

Why isnt the laptop recognizing the hard drive now…?

Note: My desktop won’t recognize it anymore either if i try and use the adapter.
Ive double checked many times. I’ve also listened to the hard drive and can’t even hear it rotating.

I pulled an old hdd from one of my friends laptops that was running windows 95. Now I am trying to transfer some files namely .doc and .xls over to his new Mac Book. I am running windows xp and have the old hdd attached to my laptop via a USB adapter. The problem is that I cannot get my machine to recognize the hdd from the old laptop. Any ideas?

Acer Aspire AL5100-U3790A Mini Desktop

This Acer Veriton small desktop computer comes loaded with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4050e low power processor running at 2.1GHz. It also has 3GB of DDR2-800 SODIMM memory, a 320GB SATA hard drive, gigabit LAN, and integrated ATI Radeon X1250 graphics with DVI, HDMI, and DVI-VGA adapter. You also get a DVD and CD burner that can burn DVD-RAM discs. All these features run on an AMD 690G chipset motherboard with S/PDIF connector. All running with security and stability with an Microsoft’s Windows Vista Home Premium. A multimedia keyboard and mouse and a set of speakers complete this package.

I have an old laptop with an IDE hard drive (20GB) but I want a 120 to 160GB hard drive on it, but I can’t find any IDE hard drives for sale anymore, only SATA drives. So I need to see if I can put a SATA drive into my laptop with an IDE connection. Do they sell adapters that fit in to my laptop case?
UPDATE: I guess I should state that newegg (where I shop frequently) doesn’t have any IDE hard drives (remember, this is for a laptop, and I thank you for the links, but those are mostly for 3.5 desktop hard drives, not 2.5 laptop hard drives) Look for yourself on newegg.

I’ve been looking for hours and can’t find a guide or tutorial on how to remove it. This is a picture of the model of the laptop I’m talking about:

Really appreciate the help.
I know how to remove the hard drive, what I don’t know how to remove is the IDE adapter that’s used to connect the hard drive to the motherboard.

i have two external hard drives….one is USB powered…it seems to work fine occasionaly, but for the most part file transfer is slow, so slow that it can’t be used to download from the internet directly to the drive and when transfering files back and forth it either takes forever, or i often get the "cannot transfer file, path is too deep" type message…when i try to delete files from the hard drive, it often will not work. i’ve plugged this same external hard drive into my desktop computer and it works fine. I also have a regular external hard drive with a power adapter…im not sure if it would have the same problems when attached to my laptop as the USB powered one would because when i plug it into the laptop it slows the entire computer down….what is wrong here???
with the path too deep problem i have minimized the amount to folders the files are transferring through…..and i have 2.0 ports i’m using, not a hub…and if power supply was the issue, then would the external hd with it’s own power supply still slow the computer down?

this isn’t about an ipod. this is about me wanting to download stuff from a friend’s external hard-drive. his cord has the firewire plug on both sides. my laptop only has serial and usb ports. what can i buy to hook his hard drive to my computer? everything i found on amazon seemed to be for hooking to an ipod
my pcmcia card is internal so i don’t have a slot for that either. (what i get for buying a cheapo compaq i guess.) what i need is a cord with the firewire connector on one end (to plug into his hard drive) and the USB on the other to plug into my computer. does such a critter exist?
